HOW TO SALT OR SUGAR RIM A COCKTAIL GLASS

Sugar Rim Glss

Some cocktail recipes, call for you to rim the glass with salt or sugar. You should also feel free to add rims to cocktail recipes that don’t call for them – this can put an exciting twist on standard recipes.

It requires little skill and looks so impressive so serve your drinks with the perfect salt or sugar rim and show off your cocktail skills to your guests.

Method:

Lemon juice or orange juice

plate

cocktail glass

Juice the lemon and add the lemon to a small plate. Then dip the glass into the lemon juice. Gently shake the glass.

50g salt or sugar

plate

Dip the glass into the salt or sugar. Fill your glass with the cocktail of your choice.

And here’s where it gets fun. Don’t limit yourself to salt and sugar! You can rim glasses with anything powdered. The possibilities are pretty much endless. Your only inhibition is making sure the flavouring of the rim goes well with the flavour of the cocktail.

Here are some additional suggestions:

Cocoa. Perfect for those chocolate martinis.

Cinnamon-sugar. Delicious with cream, chocolate, orange or coffee based liqueurs

Chilli. For a fantastic hot & spicy rim. Mix 1 part coarse salt with one part chili powder - cayenne, chipotle, etc.

Spicy. Mix equal parts coarse salt, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder.

Sweet & Spicy. A combination of chili and cocoa powder works well with chocolatey drinks.

Celery Salt. Is fantastic with tomato based drinks like Bloody Marys.

Crushed candy or cookies. Anything you can powder can be used as a rim on a glass – it must just be fine.

Ginger. Mix equal parts of powdered ginger and sugar.

Powdered Mixed drinks. Not all powdered mixed drinks are the right texture for sticking to the glass, but by moistening the glass differently you can work around that. For example, simple syrup may work better on really fine powders than lemon juice.

If you are having a party, why not set up a station with two or three of the ideas above, lots of glasses and a pitcher of your chosen cocktail. Then, your friends can choose their own and get involved. They’ll love it and YOU get to spend more time enjoying the party!

Cheers!
